IS MOBILE ID COMING TO FLORIDA?

Updated: Dec 11, 2021

It certainly looks as though Florida is well on its way to using Mobile ID technology. A law that authorizes mobile IDs was passed in the State of Florida and an application called Florida Smart ID is being piloted. The Florida Smart ID app is convenient and modern technology that allows smart devices to launch secure versions of drivers licenses through a downloaded application. Use of the app promises a contact free experience, since the device never has to leave the hand of the user. How's that for pandemic safety protocols? In fact, Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) may want to add some of the technology that is being tested in states like Arizona, and Delaware, where the touching of two phones together could also be used to identify signers for Remote Online Notarization (RON), and other notarial acts.

Currently, FLHSMV website boasts that "after downloading and authenticating, Florida motorists will simply launch their Florida Smart ID app, select the type of verification needed, and display the QR/barcode on their smart device to be scanned for verification." I think that's pretty cool. However, there is no mention of the two phones touching technology being tried in other states. If we are going to do it Florida, let's really do it! Let's keep those commissioned and appointed as notaries in mind as we develop this new technology.

I am sure that security features are top priority and some may argue that the use of this sort of technology is not safe. Well, it isn't mandatory. You can elect not to use it. It is important to add that use of the app does not preclude or excuse you from maintaining a physical version of your Florida Driver's License. In fact, you will still need to carry your physical license while operating a motor vehicle.
