Dear Notary Public, My ID is Expired.

Updated: Dec 11, 2021

You need something notarized in Florida, but your driver's license or state identification card is expired and there is no time to renew. That's FINE! There can be many things that can prevent us from getting our government issued identification (ID) renewed in a timely fashion. This isn't anything for you to be alarmed over in the State of Florida since you can still get your documents notarized. Fortunately for you, the state allows for the use of an expired ID or driver's licenses, so long as the issue date is within the past five years AND the ID includes a serial identifying number. Take time right now to get out your expired government issued card. Focus on the issue date which can be found just above the expiration date. What does it say? Has more than five years passed since that date? If it has been less than five years since your ID was issued, IT WILL BE ACCEPTED. If the issue date is located near the bottom the card, you have the newest version of the State of Florida Driver’s License or Identification Card. The state did not start using those until August of 2017. If you have that card, your ID is acceptable, the newer version of Florida IDs card has not yet been in use for five years.

Uh oh! You just discovered that your ID cannot be used. It's been over five years since it was issued. That's fine. You CAN still get your document notarized. Do you have a U.S. Passport issued within the past five years? You can use that! I hear you saying, I do have a Passport, but it was not issued by the U.S. It is a foreign issued passport. Again, that's fine. You can use that too, so long as it is stamped by the United States Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Are you starting to see a pattern here? The State of Florida has considered many scenarios and has a list of acceptable IDs that you can use when getting documents notarized. These too, MUST be current or issued within the past five years to be accepted. If you can say "yes, I have one of the following forms of ID", and it is current or issued within the past five years, then you are all set.

Do you have:

  • A current ID or driver's license issued by another U.S. state or territory of the United States issued within the past five years

  • A Canadian or Mexican driver's license or identification card

  • A Military ID

  • A Veterans Health ID Card issued by the U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs

  • An Inmate ID Card ( inmate must be in the custody of the State of Florida or Dept. of Justice, Bureau of Federal Prisons. Inmates in the custody of the State of Florida, must have had their ID issued on or before January 1, 1991)

  • A sworn, written statement from a sworn law enforcement officer that the forms of ID for an inmate were confiscated upon confinement and that the person named in the document IS the person whose signature is being notarized

  • An identification card issued by USCIS

As you can see, having an expired ID in the State of Florida, does not prevent you from getting documents notarized. Today, you have discovered the many forms of acceptable ID used in the State of Florida. #THATSFine #TotalNotarySolutions #SignaturesMadeSimple
